This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Romantic Bond.

Consider this a challenge for long-term couples who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your significant other and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit just made its online premiere on the Hulu service. Outwardly, it may seem like standard biological terror, but within Together lies a profound meditation about how we choose to love one another.

A Debut Feature Delving into Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It showcases the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for a decade. United in marriage in reality in 2017, the two stars bring a special spark to their characters, skillfully embodying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative commences when Millie and Tim transition from the metropolis to the countryside for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, sure, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the partnership as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their country house, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a slow burn of scares, blending moments of dreamlike terrors, gross (but tastefully done) body horror, and surprisingly comedic dialogue (sometimes amidst something horrific). Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A great deal of Together is exclusively the performances of its stars, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to pursue anything but his failing musical ambitions gradually emerges.

In contrast, Tim's character senses confinement and isolated by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and distant from his network of friends. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his individual identity in his partner. This fear is further exacerbated by the circumstance he does not operate a vehicle and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect is that he refrains from painting either of his characters the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the sort of issues that come with long-term unions over a long period. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, provide solace, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Thematic Depth

While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these concerns of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a perfect parallel to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal serve the other in harmony.

A Debated Finale

Together’s conclusion, which remains unspoiled, has left audiences divided on the movie's final takeaway about codependent relationships. It has been said that unattached audience members have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. Meanwhile, some couples who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Whether you’re single or coupled up, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you view relationships. Will the ending inspire anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in one of the characters and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and utter, “We could get through that together”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an exploration you can experience right now.

Together is available to watch on Hulu now.
